hi,im on win98,when IE browser opens,it says an error - that it has encountered a problem,so option to send or not an error report to the server,after which irrespective of whether i click send or don't send

,,the browser window closes and a new browswer window opens with the same error.This keeps repeating itself.This has happened after = uninstalling

I think you are in a hurry and enter details in java applet windows before the the applet has even started. Therefore you may tell us at what point you get these errors? Be patient and wait sometime before entering details like password etc. in browser windows. Most of these are started java applets for security.
first thing is to upgrade to winblows 98 se, then either switch to firefox or download IE 6.
Probably you are affected some way with a spayware or virus, the best way is to install windows again and setup your antivirus directly after that, and it will be good to do that without active internet connection.

1. have compaq pc

2. problems lately with disconnecting while running instant messaging and full tilt poker for instance.

3. tried to load today the free antivirus from gris and it won't download, inf fact i can hardly get anything to download, it will freeze up.

4. i just took norton off computer today and need to download something soon.

5. times when i sign on, i have to 'repair' my ip to get online.

boot in safe mode and then download AVG, Combofixer.exe, and Spybot s %26d. Then scan in safe mode. Then clean your disk by using the disk clean feature, you internet temp files can be harmful.

The problem you have is pretty common with symantec and mcaffe security suites. You need to completely remove them. First click start, then click search, then click all files and folders. In the box that asks for a file name type in SYMANTEC. When the files come up delete them all manually. Then do another searh on files named NORTON. Again delete them all manually. Chances are if you don't completely remove them all from your system it may continue to cause the conflict. After you remove them all you should be able to download any other security utility you need to protect your computer, provided of course Norton didn't protect you from viruses to begin with which is more likely the case. If your subscription runs out, you can still use the product to the level of protection its at when it runs out. You just won't be elidgeable for updates to the product, so no immunity to new viruses that come out as of the day the product runs out.

There is a free downloadable anti-virus called AVG, which is searchable through google. Its just as good as Norton or Mcaffee, but you have to perform manual updates on it, so if you don't have time to update this shouldn't be for you, as laziness would compromise your security.

Free ones from your bank would be absolutely fine, any anti virus you get, even if basic, will self update and will give you up to date protection against the latest viruses and trojans.

That's the same stuff I have and my computer is fine. Definitely download zonealarm. I really like it. I also have Avast-antivirus, which is really nice. If I get a virus it's able to notice it right away.

Norton is a fine program but it will require loads of system resources and memory. Make sure you have at least 1gb of ram. Zone alarm is a great free firewall. I currently have two virus programs, software firewall, hardware firewall, spybot and windows defender... there is no such thing as over kill when it comes to your personal pc.. good luck

I got a free 30 day trial of Norton Anti Virus with a new laptop. I want to install free antivirus software, AVG, spybot and ad-aware, and remove the Norton stuff as it will be disconnected next week anyway.

ok Here's what you do: First download AVG and AD-Aware to your desktop, but do NOT install it yet. Then disconnect your internet connection (this is to keep you secure). Then go to add/remove programs and uninstall Norton Internet Security, piece by piece (there are several Norton items listed, you will have to uninstall one at a time). Finally, restart your computer and install AVG and AD--aware. Good Luck!!

It should work fine regardless of your internet provider. How do you say yo KNOW there is a virus? If your computer is running slow, etc, a virus isn't always the culprit.

I recently had to remove McAfee Security Suite, as it was causing me major problems on system resources, with my PC regularly freezing. I now have AVG free antivirus, with just Windows Firewall. I tried Zonealarm, but that slowed my PC down almost to a halt. Are there any good free firewalls that are low on system resources?

I have a laptop with Windows XP Pro. I only had a free antivirus program installed. My wife recently went to a music download site and the laptop has now been completely hijacked. Internet Explorer windows start popping up as soon as I boot up. It won't connect to my wireless network and is slow as a snail. Progams are getting installed automatically and there are icons all over the desktop. I downloaded Spybot and ran several scans, but it's not helping much. Is there anything I can do short of erasing the hard drive? Is that even going to solve the problem?

Almost the same thing happened to my computer. Depending on where your wife went, it could've been just a virus site where they "pretend" to give out music. if you're downloading programs such as Spybot it won't help. sometimes those are fake. since you have mostly no programs on there, try reformating your computer, i reformated mine and it really helps! but remember to back up all of your files. I had my broadband installed last Monday, and Norton 2006 was included in the package.

Before I was running on AVG free antivirus and Ad-aware. The PC was running very fast then.

I installed Norton and everything was so slow. Now it is beginning to be so slow I can't do anything without a huge delay. Even when I am typing this it appears later than what it should!

My PC has a gig RAM, and 160 gig HDD.

Any alternatives to Norton? I worried that if I uninstall it that my protection will go as I keep my PC on continuously.

Will turning to an alternative be worth my while? I just want to gain back the speed of my computer!

Go back to avg, or try Avast which I use. Ad Aware is what I use also. I havnt gone for the Norton AV package, and Im on BT.

I had the same problem - norton was making everything really slow and my bf took them all off last night. Today its much quicker. In add/remove their wasn't anything saying norton to remove but if you look at the properties of each thing in remove the ones with 'symantic' are the norton files. Takes ages to take them all off but its much better once they've gone. Good luck xxx
I would try uninstalling norton first and see if your pc speeds back up. If it does...just go back to AVG again. If it does not speed up, could be something else on the pc causing it and you may want to then do a full system scan.

Hi,

5 Days before when i turned on my pc in the morning, i found trojan virus infected on svchost.dll in c:\. I am using Windows 2000 professional with service pack 4. I've installed AVG Free antivirus. AVG detected the virus and i took Heal option. It showed file deleted. But when i took shutdown, it shows error caused to winlogon.exe and instead of shutting down, it again restared the pc. When again login, the same file svchost.dll created in the root of C. Now i moved that file to virus vault. Whenever I am login, one command window running as c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe and stays there. I think this created the svchost.dll file. Now when i took running process, i found 5 svchost.exe instances. How can i rectify this problem? when i compared svchost.exe with my other pcs', size is the same. Please let me know how can remove this shutting down problem permanently. When it is restarted and if i took shutdown option without login, it shutsdown normally.

So, yesterday I used my AVG 7.5 to check for viruses...turns out that there was a worm infecting C://WINDOWS/svchost.exe...now, after the scan I couldn't heal it, and then I wiped it.

Now...what I want to ask is...will my computer be disturbed by this? Can I get it back? And what do you think is the best free antivirus, disk defrag, and registry cleaner for now?

I bought this lap top about 3 months ago and it was really fast. My internet is 10 mbps but for some reason the internet has begun running very slowly. My roommates' internet is still fast so i can't figure out what the problem is. I use Mozilla Firefox, although i didn't before. I have AVG Free antivirus that did catch something previously but i deleted it. What could this be and how can i make my internet go fast again?

Try checking the Firefox forums. Also, make sure you have the latest version. I've been running Firefox on Vista for several weeks and haven't had any problems.
Currently Vista doesn't have Firefox on it's list of supported applications. Wait till they either release a hotfix for the app or Firefox devs figure out what is the conflict with Vista and put out an update.
This is why I didn't start running XP until 2003. I'm not going to pay good money to be a beta tester... I think it's better to wait and let the bugs get worked out.

i use avira premium security suite, it has email checker, firewall, anti virus etc plus the use of spyware begone. ive had these programs for 3 years now and they use small resources and auto update. spyware begone auto loads with windows and checks memory, registry and disk. you can make it do a full scan as well.

it also checks files downloading in limewire/kazar etc.

sometimes too many programs will conflict with each other, and use lots of resources. keep it simple.

Don't trust it. winAntivirus did not even show up on www.download.com, and most of the antivirus apps will show there. If you don't already have this software installed on your computer then there is no reason for you to be getting alerts from it. So I was using Firefox and trying to translate a Japanese website and I wanted something better than Google Language Tools. So I clicked one result and 3 Popups and a dialog box asking me to download some free antivirus software appeared (I'm 99% Sure it's a WinFixer Clone), but I forgot about one thing, and clicked the X command in the dialog box. Suddenly a webpage opened. I didn't know what to do so I forced quit on my computer (I held down the OFF button). Now I know the whole bit on the WinFixer Trojan. I don't think anything downloaded yet because I didn't see the Firefox Downloads window. But now, I want to know, is it safe to turn my computer back on? I forced quit as soon as the webpage opened, but I'm not quite sure if it downloaded. This all happened last week. Can someone please help me?

As far as defrag, it is part of XP. Go to all programs -%26gt; accesories -%26gt; system tools.

Run disk CLEAN UP BEFORE YOU RUN DEFRAG. If you have any errors and need to run chkdsk it will let you know.
As the other people that answered, Windows XP does have a built in defragger. But IMO its not that great. Its slow. I recommend Diskeeper, much better and faster than the built in defragger that comes with XP.

I paid for trend micro pc-cillin,and i havew been happy with it,but recently it has been detecting these things but couldnt delete them as access is denied.Then when i try to search manualy,i cant always find them.I also have all the free antivirus programs,and the only one i have found that never misses them is Avast,but i think i have lost a few system files by deleting them to get rid of the viruses,as avast couldnt clean them.will i eventualy have to wipe my hard drive and start again.??

Hi there,

I work in the PC security industry and there has been a growing trend over the last 6-12 months of a new type of malware (virii, trojans, rootkits, etc) which is becoming increasingly difficult for a number of the big players (Norton, McAfee, etc) to remove. This is basically down to the fact that their method of protecting their usebase is fundamentally flawed.

All these forms of protection work on signatures which means a new piece of malware first has to be caught, studied and then a fix manually created by one of thousands of researchers they employ. This type of protection is dying in front of our eyes.

I would recommend a program (which I have no affiliation with) called Prevx1. This relies on a completely new method of protecting their userbase, based on behaviour and something called "Community Intrusion Protection". This means that if one user of the entire Prevx userbase is infected with a piece of malware - Prevx makes this known to the community database, which in turn then immediately protects every single Prevx user from then being infected with that malware again without the need to download any signatures or updates! Prevx really is seeing malware earlier than anyone else, and managing to protect their userbase in minutes - not the hours, days or weeks than all other security programs manage. It really is an amazing process which means they are protecting their users from more malware than any other PC security program.

you can't rely on the windows firewall... you need to download something.. which is the one you've just mentioned AVG... its a freeware so you can download it...
xp firewall only checks stuff incoming, but nothing outgoing(like a trojan sending out spam from your pc) it sort of half works!

it depends on how much work you do on your computer. since you have adaware, if you need a lot of room on your computer for your work, then i would keep the norton til you find another program that you like, that doesn't take up so much room.

Honestly, if any program is really using up so much of your resources as to cause a problem.. then it's time to upgrade your RAM.

I personally use McAfee and I do not install all of the extras.. just the antivirus and firewall... so you might want to check to make sure you do not have things running / installed with norton that are not necessary...

But again... if a single program is sapping your RAM then it's time to upgrade your system...

umm i find limewire to work great as long as you no what your downloading just dont download files with silly names. Kazaa was great for the time being but yes to many viruses go through it. If i had to pick on it would be Ares there are virtually a few or no viruses at all. Plus you get extra fetures such as chatting. And its quite popular so you can find pretty much any song.

I just bought a new computer with Vista on it. It came with McAfee preinstalled. When I open up the security suite, it says that to protect computer and files action is required. When I click it it just gives me the option to fix it when I click fix, it will give me a window in the bottom right corner of my screen that gives me the option to register now or later. I click now and nothing happens. I have tried to click register now several times for the bast few months and nothing still. It says that internet and network is protected and email and IM say that there is action required to. Is there anything I can do to register. I tried going to the McAfee site and trying to register but there is nothing there! I know that alot of threads say to uninstall McAfee and install and free antivirus software. But I had AVG on my last computer and well it ate it. I mean it got viruses anyways. Please let me know what I can do to fix this problem with McAfee. Thanks

Yes your computer will go faster without the McAfee but make sure you have some kind of antivirus protection.
AVG sucks I used to have it but i switched to avast. Avast is much better. Because it scans e-mail, P2P, IM, and it has an live scaning so when you open up a program it scans the program to see if there is a virus. Only downside to avast is that it doesnt do a full daily scan. You have to make it do a full scan.

Hello there, I am a computer geek who often performs repairs on friend's computers and such. Hey Guys, me again. Look, this "VirusFighter" programme, I downloaded it from a different site and apparently it is a scam. It has clogged up my compute,r I can't Copy %26 Paste, or barely get into the internet. My computer is running slow and as soon as I log in on the compute,r it gives me two seconds to click an "X" on a small Black Box, if I don't then my computer restarts. I found the VirusFighter in my computer, though I got "Acess Denied" to most files. I dwonloadedUnlocker and unlocked most and deleted them. There is one file left called "State", I think ti is a Shell Something File? Btw, I downloaded VirusFighter as a Trial, so It is not saved in my Add or Remove Programmes. Also, because of VirusFighter, My start Menu and Taskbar have completly disappeared, thankfully I have allot of Desktop Buttons. I tried several Anti Viruses, ESET, AVG, Spybot and Syware Doctor. I need a free AntiVirus, which can delete these Viruses on the spot. Can anyone help me?

I suggest gathering all the files you want to keep into one spot, putting them on a disk or thumb drive, formatting your hard drive and reinstalling your OS, then scan the thumb drive or disk with a program like AVG(as you mentioned) and if it comes up clean putting those files back on... but once you get a virus they are very hard to remove depending if they infect the master boot records and program files which I'm guessing yours has.

I have WOT(Web of trust), which like site advisor warns you about dangerous sites. When I typed in that website, WOT warned me that this was a dangerous site!

The bottom line is.. you are posting on a public web board... the people on here are most likely not professional technicians and/or not professional information security professionals (like myself), etc.. and are many times providing biased advice that has no basis in reality and is oftentimes (as you have unfortunately found out) is malicious in nature.

The best possible solution for 99.9% of the people posting on this site is to invest in a proper security suite that includes complete protection (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc) and nis from preferably one RELIABLE vendor (like McAfee or Norton) and is properly configured and kept completely up to date...

this coupled with current windows updates, safe browsing habits and above all... common sense. That's it.

You don't need a bunch of freeware junk or anyhting else... just one good suite that is properly maintained and some common sense.

my computer does it too. i'm not sure that it's a virus, but my dad is a computer programmer, and he says that when i stay on here too long, it works too hard if you will, and shuts down because it's doing too much. similar to laptops, desktop computers can overheat. so that might be why. if i were you, i'd shut down the computer COMPLETELY when i'm not on it, not just stand-by. that might help it from working too hard.

Close any open browers; then go to Start %26gt; Control Panel %26gt; Add/Remove Programs

Wait for the list to populate; once it does, you should see a program that wasn't there before - probably something that's a toolbar. Delete the program using the "Remove" button to the right. Once it has removed the program, you should be able to open a browser, and go to Tools %26gt; Internet Options and put the address of the page of your choice in the box. Then click on apply, and ok; you shouldn't be steer away from your chosen home page again.

If that is what you mean then i 've literally went thru e.v.e.r.y s.i.n.g.l.e. user review comments on download.com of the two software and chose Avira AntiVir over Avast AVG at the end based on better overall reviews by the users(*everytime i come across user reviews that compared the 2, Antivir was always the better one, though it was a close tie).

I 've used it for two years now. detected alot of virus while it runs in background, guarded from alot of potential virus threats while surfing online, auto-update function does all work itself, the support forum on their site is really prompt in replying questions(one of the fastest response service i've seen). Though only 1 time virus successfully creeped in unaware while using limewire and crashed windows.

So, yesterday I used my AVG 7.5 to check for viruses...turns out that there was a worm infecting C://WINDOWS/svchost.exe...now, after the scan I couldn't heal it, and then I wiped it.

Now...what I want to ask is...will my computer be disturbed by this? Can I get it back? And what do you think is the best free antivirus, disk defrag, and registry cleaner for now?

Personally, I'm not too keen on McAfee, the only one of their products I use is siteadvisor ( http://www.siteadvisor.com )...

It has happened to me several times that I went to fix a friends computer and McAfee (which they had installed and paid for) didn't manage to get rid of the virus/trojan that had infected the pc. The next thing I usually try is downloading AVG, and believe it or not, 80% of the time it manages to get rid of it.

For firewall, well it depends. Zonealarm for example (one of the most well-known free firewalls) is well known for eating up system resources, and especially for slowing down the system startup.. But it is quite a good firewall.

Comodo personal is also very good (and free).

Personally, I just use the built in windows firewall. Many wannabe geeks tell me I'm an idiot for doing that, but they don't realise I have many other layers of security set up on my pc so that I don't have a huge need for outbound protection. (If you're confused by this: the main gripe many people have with the windows firewall is that it only monitors incoming traffic, not outbound. So if you have a piece of malware on your pc, it can connect to the internet..) My philosophy is to keep my pc clean in the first place and it has served me well over the last three years..

i use avg free antivirus and avg antispyware, but still cant detect the virus or whatever. the problem is that my pc cant standby properly(when i standby it , it only standby for a few second before resuming to the desktop). AVG and Avast are 2 different free antivirus apps from 2 different companies. AVG is easier to use and does not take up a lot of resources. Avast on the other hand is a better scanner but it takes a lot of resources on your PC. Having used both, I am now using a much better antivirus : AVIRA AntiVir PE. Avg pound for pound is the best out....its free and antiviruses like Norton and Mcafee cant hold a candle to it...it doesnt have as many options as the others but unlike Norton and especially Mcafee if u decide that u dont want it just uninstall it and its all gone.......Mcafee is almost impossible to get rid of.....plus w/ AVG when it finds a problem it shows u were the root of the problem is, which is nice because if for some reason Avg cant delete or quarrentine the issue it shows u exactly where its at in ur comp so u can manually delete it.....updates automatically....totally hands free.....plus its not a resource hog like Norton...Avast is another free one but it doesnt compare to AVG......u wont be disappointed w/ this program.... enjoy :)

No. These are two different products from two different companies. While AVG comes from Grisoft, Avast is the creation of Alwil.

From my experience with these two, Avast is definitely better.

But if you feel otherwise, try AOL's Active Virus Shield. This one is powered by Kaspersky and is very good. It's free and detects many viruses (virii?) undetected by AVG, Avast etc. And of course, it doesn't slow your system's startup down.

Two months ago my free antivirus ran out and stupid me did not replace it. Unfortunately I am now paying the price for procrastinating. I thought my computer was overheating, because it kept suddenly shutting down. All the programs one by one would close and then my computer would log off and then turn off. Also sometimes when it was running but not in use you could hear it across my apartment because it was working very hard though not doing anything (that i could see anyways). Well now that i put AVG on here it's picking up trojans, spyware, adware over and over again. Even spybot can't get rid of them. It just keeps pulling more and more in and it's wasting my 512 of RAM which is the reason my computer is shutting down sometimes after only a few minutes. Any suggestions of things I can try since I'm burning everything important off to reformat any ways? I don't have much to lose now anyhow. Might as well see if anything works out.

Well, it's a very bad idea to have two antiviruses on your machine at once. You want either Norton or AVG, not both. Since you've already paid for a subscription to Norton, I'd use that until it expires, then look into alternatives if you want. In the meantime, please delete all traces of AVG and any other antivirus software to avoid damage to your computer.

You can use all the antispyware software your heart desires, but only one antivirus.

Norton antivirus removes all kinds of viruses and spywares. For me it's sure well worth the price..
my recommendation is to keep using Norton 2007 until it expires. Then evaluate the alternatives. Norton is a good product and you paid for it. just ruun liveupdate regularly and schedule an occasional (once a month) virus scan.
Norton is good, so I would suggest that you keep running it. It's better than AVG. Also, I wouldn't recommend running two anti-virus/firewalls at the same time. It could cause a conflict.

my free antivirus , AVG , doesn't update anymore , when I hit the "check for updates " button it says it can't connect whit the server.

I updated it before without problems and I didn't block it whit the firewall or changed the configurations. I even reinstalled it but it still doesn't update. how do I fix this ?

Try another install, ensure you see this section on the update part of the install, and if this still does not work, look to your internet connection settings. There is a free one at the avg site. sometimes spyware can change settings to prevent virus updates.

1: scroll lock was stuck on the keyboard when text-based applications were common, like telnet and DOS. hit scroll lock and it used to stop the scrolling text so you can read it before it moves offscreen.

2: The function keys do different things. f5 reloads the web browser, alt+f4 closes the program you're using, f11 usually makes the browser go fullscreen, kind of have to look them up.

since using norton 360 i have endless problems regarding virus's, malware, spyware etc....they wanted 100 euros to sort out a problem i couldn't fix (i emailed BBC's watchdog regarding the support norton offers) so far i spoken to karun%26lt;, sibil and ajun, who recommended norton support. eventualy i sorted the problem using AVG free antivirus (highly recommended) and sana software. How old is the computer? and are you sure that you are infected? A lack of RAM memory or older processors can also bog a computer down. Mcafee is a decent antivirus program, so if it is up to date, the problem could be with the computer itself.

it all depends on the buzz. If its buzzing when your accessing files, its just the hard drive seeking, if it buzzing randomly then one of your fans have bad berrings and needs to be replaced. if its buzzing when you have a cd in the drive its your cd drive. But its is NOT a virus.

First you have to remove Norton, most other antivirus won't install over norton. by using free antivirus programs like avast? all the program does is give u tons of false readings and if u follow the recommendations u end up having half of your important programs disabled. sounds kinda dumb if u ask me. btw i put avast through a simple test. They aren't false readings, your new pc out of the box is probably loaded with spyware or spyware-like programs. Keep your system simple and basic. I always use free antivirus programs like AVG and have no problems. I don't install invasive software like AOL, I don't run IE, I don't try to rip off illegal music or DVDs and I don't visit porn sites. Every time you go to those kinds of websites you end up with spyware on your computer.
The simple answer is that avast saw programs that were pre-installed by the manufacturer as viruses because half of the fit the description of spy-ware. People who buy norton and the like are retarded because it is a system hog. I use AVG on all of my systems and it has found things that Norton and those other big anti-virus packages did not.
