How old is the computer? and are you sure that you are infected? A lack of RAM memory or older processors can also bog a computer down. Mcafee is a decent antivirus program, so if it is up to date, the problem could be with the computer itself.

All three are good, free antivirus apps. Just don't have all three at the same time. Also, you might have to uninstall MCafee.

it all depends on the buzz. If its buzzing when your accessing files, its just the hard drive seeking, if it buzzing randomly then one of your fans have bad berrings and needs to be replaced. if its buzzing when you have a cd in the drive its your cd drive. But its is NOT a virus.

First you have to remove Norton, most other antivirus won't install over norton. To do this go to their site find the support tab and download and run Norton Removal tool for your version.There are several free antivirus programs out there that are better than norton or McAfee.Just search for free antivurus

Then download free home addition of anti virus from www. avast.com, you will get a key no. to activate it and be safe. as long as i think macafee will remove the viruses for you, but you have to spend time on the site to find the removal tool, www.symantec.com, do some searching, please, we all are fed up

by using free antivirus programs like avast? all the program does is give u tons of false readings and if u follow the recommendations u end up having half of your important programs disabled. sounds kinda dumb if u ask me. btw i put avast through a simple test. They aren't false readings, your new pc out of the box is probably loaded with spyware or spyware-like programs. Keep your system simple and basic. I always use free antivirus programs like AVG and have no problems. I don't install invasive software like AOL, I don't run IE, I don't try to rip off illegal music or DVDs and I don't visit porn sites. Every time you go to those kinds of websites you end up with spyware on your computer.
The simple answer is that avast saw programs that were pre-installed by the manufacturer as viruses because half of the fit the description of spy-ware. People who buy norton and the like are retarded because it is a system hog. I use AVG on all of my systems and it has found things that Norton and those other big anti-virus packages did not.

Its not a good idea to run multiple security software as they can conflict and believe it or not...too much security can be a bad thing as it can become over restrictive. I would see which one will work out best for you and stick with one of them.

I can no longer access various websites (e.g. www.notabene.com) with my desktop computer, neither with Firefox nor with IE 7. Whenever I try I always get a message saying the site is temporarily unavailable, but it is never available, even days later. I am running Windows Home XP with the Windows firewall and with AVG's free antivirus program. I used to be able to access this website in the past. I tried disabling Ad Muncher, which eliminates banner ads, and also the firewall, but I still couldn't access the sites. I can get them on my notebook computer, though, connected to the same home wireless network.

I clean my Browser Cache once a week whether it needs it or not. A large cache often causes this problem with accessing sites.

IE 6:

Tools%26gt;Internet Options%26gt;General tab%26gt;Delete Cookies, Files (check mark the box for OFFline Content in the window that appears) and Clear History buttons.

IE 7:

Do as above and in the General Tab go to the Delete button in the Browsing History area. In the new window delete the above items.

Since I don't use Firefox I can't tell you how to clean its cache.

Hello! Recently my USB disk got a Virus [Kingston Data Traveler 2GB]. The virus was caught from my friend's PC which later infected my USB, I reformatted the drive but before that i checked for Viruses by AVG-Free Antivirus, It showed several viruses. I then healed them up, Reformatted the drive. I then gave it to another of my Friend who's Pc was working fine, No Viruses i mean. He connected it and opened My Computer and right clicked the USB icon but to his surprise the language that was in the menu was beyond comprehension....It was like "$$%%26%$"

Now even after the reformatting how can the trouble/virus survive....Help me out as soon as possible.......I REALLY Need some help here....!

I have been doing quite some research today. I wanted to test out the AOL Active Virus Shield Powered By Kapersky, But, When i went to its link I found "AOL Active Virus Shield Powered by McAffee".

CommWarrior is a whole family of viruses for Symbian S60 R2 phones, containing about a couple of dosen variants. However, what you most probably have is either the first three (A, B or C) or the Q variant - they are the most widespread ones.

If your computer continues to restart, and will not go into the operating system (assumes you have windows), you may have some corrupted system files. You may need to have a computer shop save your data and attempt to repair the os or reinstall it. Some good programs to get are: AVG antivirus by grisoft (its free and in the top 10 antivirus programs), ad-aware se by lavasoft (checks for spyware), windows defender (checks for spyware, but needs a legitmate copy of the os), spybot search and destroy (checks for spyware). all software above is free for non-commercial use.

If you can boot into your PC I would suggest running any diagnostic tests that came pre-installed with your machine. Particularly system checks like your motherboard, and of course especially the CPU. You may have a hardware issue here. You can check to see if your CPU fan is not clogged with dust or otherwise not keeping it cool as it might be overheating. Sometimes it can be something that simple.

Personally i don't really go for freeware,however,if you're looking for a good av freeware, id recommend AntiVir by Avira.

Avast and AVG are both good antivirus products. For Ondeman Virus Scanning download and install Bitdefender 8. AVG is a very good anti-virus. It does miss some viruses, but then the same is true for EVERY anti-virus, be it free or cost $5000. AVG has the added advantage of being very light on your system resources, so you virtually don't feel it's presence. AVG has a free version, which is free for life. I guess you were using AVG 7.1 which expired in January this year. The latest version of AVG is 7.5, you can get the free version from

But I say THERE IS NO BEST. Here's why.

I use Norton... it's good. If everyone used Norton, then a new Virus could KILL us all. But if we use different anti-virus solutions, then a new virus won't WHACK us all. It just makes good sense. But check the reviews. Norton is usually rated high. McAfee is usually a bit lower. Some of the FREE solutions are not listed at the ratings, but other articles and experiences show that they are pretty good.

Well, not only will you need a firewall and at least 2 anti spyware programs, you are going to need a new Anti Virus. Wondering if anyone could be so kind as to help me out on one, please.

I am helping out a friend (or at least trying) to install some anti virus so on and so forth onto their computer.

They use dial-up and we're having major problems. The question is : can anyone recommend a good free product I could install from a USB drive or something? If this is a sensible way of doing things.

Cell phone viruses are uncommon and you likely do not have one. What you need to do is try a reboot (shut down, take out battery, wait 5 mins, put battery back in, restart). IF that doesn't work try a Master reset (most phone manuals will tell you how). That usually solves most phone problems

Avast is what I use. It's got a slicker interface than AVG, and works well for me.

The problem with Norton (aside from price) is that it can take a speedy PC and reduce it to a crawl. Both Avast and AVG are just as good as Norton and don't impact performance as much.

Just configure them to your liking, preferrably disabling as much of the background features in AVG as possible such as E-mail and live scanning. These processes run in the background and take up resources. You don't need them if you scan regularly - maybe once a week (depending on your level of internet usage) and whenever you notice strange virus-like behavior on your system.

Be sure to use the Immunize feature with Spybot.

I don't know why you'd even be thinking about getting rid of it. I've had it 4 years with no problems. I got Norton with my last computer purchase and it missed viruses that AVG picked up. I love it, a daily update and scan when YOU want it to. You can uninstall it by going to your Control Panel and then to Add/Delete Programs.

My McAfee subscription is coming to an end, (no thanks to them, they re-billed me after 2 years for $90 for a subscription continuation without asking, underhanded toolbags).

I've been quite unhappy with McAfee, I went through the Hijackthis forums a while back and found out that McAfee has missed A LOT over the years.

So now I'm on the prowl for a new anti-virus, firewall, scanner deal, you know - a security package of some sort. What should I get? There is a plethora of free software out there, what is the best? (or the best combination?) or is it better to pay for one of the major brands?

They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
