What is the best and then what is the best free one. It's time for me to renew Norton and i am looking at other options.

Go with AVG anti virus , you can get it at download.com.

Best of all , it's free , but , it performs better than one you pay for.

In my humble opinion I agree with Joe. AVG is the best AV I have had on my computers. The fact that it has a free version is also a bonus.
there are so many antivirus software, depending on your usage and needs. for me its avast antivirus software since im into word processing and my common virus is Brontok
I also think that AVG is the best free anti-virus and it's easier for updates. Avast is also good, though it's not free.
if i were you i would not renew norton especially after what i just read in a recent issue (sept 2007) of Consumer Reports Magazine. i would go with a trend micro because one of their products just recently got ranked number one by the magazine. As the magazine puts it,Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 "offers fairly inexpensive all-around protection". here's the complete list:
